New practice schedule, tryouts, and volunteer sign-ups

    Dear Highland Creek Hurricanes:

Welcome once again to the 2021 season! Practice starts one week from today on Monday, May 17. Please review our message from May 2 (also available here) and make sure you understand the measures we have put in place to keep everyone safe this season.

    Here are a few updates:

    1) New practice schedule: We have had to change the practice schedule to ensure that we do not have too many swimmers at any given practice time. We have a lot of older swimmers and fewer younger swimmers this year. As a result, our new schedule is as follows:

    All 8-and-under Girls and Boys: 4:30-5:00 p.m. (May 17-June 11) / 8:00-8:30 a.m. (starting June 14)
    All 9/10 Girls and Boys: 5:00-5:45 p.m. / 8:30-9:15 a.m.
    All 11/12 Girls and Boys, 13/14 Girls: 5:45-6:30 p.m. / 9:15-10:00 a.m.
    13/14 Boys, 15-18 Women, 15-18 Men: 6:30-7:30 p.m. / 10:00-11:00 a.m.

Although we will not have a separate practice time for the junior team, we will divide the younger swimmers into lanes based on ability and speed. The coaches will decide on a case-by-case basis if some of the 8-and-unders should be practicing with the 9/10 swimmers or vice versa.

    2) Tryouts: If your swimmer is new to the team or wants to move from the junior team to the senior team, they should come to the first practice on Monday, May 17, at the designated time for their age group (see above). We will have a lane reserved for tryouts. As a reminder, the swimmer must be able to swim 25 yards unassisted (any stroke) to qualify for the junior team and 50 yards unassisted to qualify for the senior team. If the swimmer qualifies, they can join their group’s practice that first day.

    3) Volunteers: After initially limiting the number of volunteer positions that each family could select, we are now in the position that we need more volunteers! Please log into Swimtopia and go to the page for future meets to sign up for additional volunteer slots (as many as you can!). Remember that Shift 1 will be 10-and-under events and Shift 2 will be the 11-and-over events. Only swimmers, volunteers, coaches, and officials will be allowed on deck for meets. We still have 3 unfilled positions for the first Speedy Meet on June 5 (junior team parents only) and 19 unfilled positions (yikes!) for the first Regulation Meet at River Run on June 7.

Thank you in advance for all that you do to help make the swim team possible, and let us know if you have any questions.
