New to Swim? FAQ

Why should my child join the Highland Creek Hurricanes summer league?

Highland Creek Hurricanes is a fun community activity where your kids can learn new skills and meet new friends.

My child has never been on a swim team before, is that okay? Or conversely, my child is a year round swimmer, is this right for them?

Yes! The coaches will assess the swimmers abilities at the beginning of the season and make certain they are grouped with other kids around their same age and capabilities. Novice swimmers have a great time learning, growing, and meeting new friends. This is a developmental recreational swim program.

We have quite a few year round swimmers. Many year round swimmers do this for fun, extra practice, and more opportunities to get up and race. The coaches will work with you and your existing practice schedule.

What if I have vacation planned during the swim season?

Go on vacation and have a great time! We use swimtopia.com to register, provide meet information, and opt in/out for swim meets. If you're not going to be at a swim meet, simply don't register for that meet.

What equipment does my child need?

Racing swim suit (team suit). Recommended: goggles, cap, and towel. We do sell caps and will provide a suit link to our preferred vendor.

Is there a fee to participate?

Yes. It is $160 for the first child and $130 for each additional child in the same family.

Why is there a fee to participate?

The swim team has expenses including dues to our swim league (pays for things like renting the pool for champs), coaches wages, and the annual banquet.

How do I pay the fee?

Fees can be paid via the swimtopia.com site.

How do the coaches/board communicate with parents?

Each age group will have a GroupMe (QR code will be available at swim practices) and email.

How do I sign up for communications?

Email is collected at registration, GroupMe code will be available in the pavilion once practices start.

What happens at tryouts?

Children who need to attend tryouts (new swimmers or swimmers trying to move from Pre-Team to Team) will need to swim one length of the pool in any stroke they choose (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle). It doesn't matter how long it takes for the child to swim the length of the pool, the one rule is they can not touch the lane line or wall during their tryout.

Does my child need to go to tryouts?

Only if they are new to the team or trying to move from Pre-Team to Team.

What if we can't make it to tryouts?

The coaches will assess on your child's first day of practice or request you come at a certain time

How does my child qualify for pre-team?

Successfully swimming one length of the pool (25m).

How does my child qualify for team?

By swimming two lengths of the pool (50m).

What's the difference?

Pre-Team has meets only on Saturday mornings in June. The child must be 8 and under. These are called Speedy Meets. These are introductory meets that are more laid back and encourage the swimmer to get used to racing. Each child can choose to swim one lap of each stroke. There are no disqualifications.

Team meets are almost every Monday and Thursday evening in June. This is a structured meet with disqualifications. The meet, including warm ups, takes place between 5-9:30pm.

What if I pay the team fee and my child doesn't participate?

We will reimburse your registration through the first week of practice. There is a $10 administrative fee for ALL refunds.

Is there a volunteer requirement?

Yes, each family is required to sign up to volunteer several shifts. If your child is on Team, please do not sign up to volunteer at speedy meets.

What are the tasks associated with each of the volunteer positions?

The volunteer positions include meet set up and clean up, timer, concessions, child gatherer, clerk of course, ribbon writer, and stroke & turn judge (this requires a reimbursable training course).

What does a meet look like, how long, where to go, what to do?

This article includes a general order of events, however our meets put the freestyle relay in the middle of the meet as the meets can get long. Typically meets last 3 or 4 hours, but it depends on the size of the teams swimming and the speed of the swimmers in the meet. (https://www.summerleagueswimming.com/order-of-events/)

Speedy meets are on Saturday mornings and last about 60 minutes.

How many meets during a season?

For the 2026 season there are 4 speedy meets for the Pre-Team and 6 meets for Team plus a championship meet for qualifying swimmers.

How do I write my races on my arm? What does that mean? Why?

We call it the EHL grid, which stands for Event#, Heat#, Lane#. Just bring a sharpie to your first meet and ask one of the other parents for help.

Please review our FaceBook page for how to videos.
